Introduction
Welcome to Here’s to Your Health with Josh Lane. Here’s to Your Health discusses the current thinking and wellness, bringing you the most influential thinkers in beauty, fitness, and longevity. Your host Joshua Lane was part of the Dr. Ann Wigmore team that helped bring wheatgrass sprouts and raw foods to a worldwide audience. And now the host of Here’s to Your health, Joshua Lane.

Josh Lane
Thank you for tuning in to this edition of Here’s to Your Health. I’m your host Josh Lane, and my guest is Sara Bonham. Sara Bonham is the co-founder of Perennial and they have developed a product called Daily Gut & Brain, which is a plant-based nutrition drink for we over the age of 50, which is a very nice and big segment of the marketplace, and Sara has done other excellent work in nutrition and has really been doing some work that’s really kind of groundbreaking quite frankly, and as a subject of nutrition enjoys great credibility with almost everyone these days, as opposed to, oh say, 20 or 30 years ago when people were not paying much attention. It’s a pleasure to have Sara Bonham on the show today.

Sara, thank you for your time.

Sara Bonham
Thank you, so much, for having me. It’s an honor to be on your show today.

Josh Lane
Oh, thanks. I’m really happy to have you on. And so, you're the co-founder of Perennial, which again is a product, it’s called Daily Gut & Brain, which is a very nice tasting beverage…drink. Nutrition drink for we over the age of 50. Now, what is your scientific background that allows you to pursue this kind of subject?

Sara Bonham
Yeah, that’s a great question. So, my background, I studied food science, agricultural chemistry, at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, and did a graduate degree as well in bioengineering, and through my graduate studies I really learned a lot more about the potential of plant-based ingredients, how we can leverage them for health much more than most people even imagine. They’re used in all sorts of different applications today and really thought, yeah, the 50 plus consumer was really lacking in innovation and at Perennial we’re really proud to be championing this demographic and innovating for them with plant-based nutrition focused on healthy aging.

Josh Lane
Our guest is Sara Bonham, who is the co-founder of Perennial, and they have a great new product called Daily Gut & Brain, which is a plant-based nutrition drink for healthy aging. It has some excellent ingredients, including Omega 3s, important B-Complex vitamins, you know, B6, B12, folic acid. Really a nice intelligent formulation.

Sara, may I ask this personal question? Did your mom and dad, did they influence you? Were they involved with nutrition? Were you involved with nutrition as a teenager? Did you suddenly realize, oh I want to pursue this as a professional career?

Sara Bonham
Yeah. You know, my family had a huge impact on my career path. Growing up my mom had cholesterol issues and just seeing how a plant-based diet really affected her inspired me as well. My whole family was lactose intolerant so a lot of the non-dairy options on the market never really quite tasted right and having a food science background I really thought there was so much room for improvement, and just in general plant-based products don't have any cholesterol, they’re lactose-free, and with health science, we can go so much further beyond just sensory today, and that’s why Daily Gut & Brain has some focus on brain health and digestive wellness.

Josh Lane
Right. Our guest is Sara Bonham, who is the co-founder of Perennial, and they have a new product called Daily Gut & Brain, which is a plant-based nutrition drink for healthy aging. Now, Sara, now that the world is kind of catching up with your scientific background how do we use the Daily Gut & Brain? Do you suggest…is it one with each meal? I mean, what’s you're thinking?

Sara Bonham
Yeah, that’s a great question. So, in many ways Daily Gut & Brain is considered is a mini-meal. We put that on the bottle. It’s only 140 calories, so it doesn't add to your waistline, but it has 8g of complete protein, so it can be sued as a healthy snack, 5g of fiber omega. We do find that our consumers love having the vanilla product in the morning. It’s not full of sugar, it can be used in a smoothie, and we have a chocolate product as well and a lot of folks like having that in the afternoon in replace of an unhealthy snack.

Josh Lane
Right. Right. Our guest is Sara Bonham, who is the co-founder of Perennial, and we’re chatting about the new product they have called Daily Gut & Brain, which is a plant-based nutrition drink for healthy aging. Now, what are some of the ingredients in the gut and brain health that you feel are of paramount importance?

Sara Bonham
Yeah, so we have a strong emphasis, in our product, on brain health and digestive wellness, so there is 5g of prebiotic fiber, and fiber does so much more than just keep you full. The prebiotics enhance calcium absorption, they are good for your microbiome. We have ingredients, a nutrient complex for your brain, such as DHA, Omega 3, and it’s plant-based sourced as well, it comes from algae, as well as the highest quantity of natural vitamin E, which the brain actually favors over synthetic vitamin E. Folate, choline, and…oh, and we add folate not folic acid, which is really important, I think, too because as we age we digest vitamins and minerals differently and a lot of women they carry a gene that blocks the digestion of folic acid, so we didn’t want to add folic acid. We added folate to our product.

Josh Lane
Oh, I see. Our guest is Sara Bonham, and we’re chatting about the new product called Daily Gut & Brain health, from Perennial. You know, Sara, I didn’t actually realize that folic acid is not the same as folate. I just thought they were just kind of used interchangeably. So, is folate a newer and better technology?

Sara Bonham
Folate actually is the more digested version of folic acid in the body, so it’s almost like consuming predigested protein, your body readily absorbs it, so by Perennial putting 50% the daily value of folate in our nutrition drinks we thought consumers would really feel the benefit faster, and kind of feel the best version of themselves, so we like to think so.

Josh Lane
Our guest is Sara Bonham, who is the co-founder of Perennial, and we’re speaking about Sara’s new product called Daily Gut & Brain, which is a plant-based nutrition drink for we over the age of 50, but anyone certainly could be using it successfully. So, let’s say for example someone is over 50 and they are using it. Do they use it before they go to the gym when they come back from the gym? What’s kind of the best time?

Sara Bonham
Yeah, so we like to say either in the mid-morning or around three PM when you’re having a bit of a slump because there’s 8g of quality protein, fiber, and all of these 11 vitamins and minerals to kind of give you a boost. I would say either mid-morning, just before lunch, or in the afternoon to replace unhealthy snacks. We do have a lot of consumers as well that I’ve learned have it after a game of tennis, pickleball, because it is very satisfying. It’s got the protein and the vitamins so you're not going to have cravings and it’s not going to spike your blood sugar. It’s got lower net carbs as well.

Josh Lane
All right. Our guest is Sara Bonham, and Sara has a great new product called Daily Gut & Brain, which is a plant-based nutrition drink for healthy aging. Sara, I noticed that this formulation is plant-based, so there’s no lactose, it’s nondairy. Based on your scientific background and understanding of the subject do you think that in general, for most of us most of the time, it’s better to avoid dairy products?

Sara Bonham
Yeah, that’s a good question. I think as we age, we have more digestive issues, higher prevalence of lactose intolerance. Dairy does have cholesterol, which can not be as great for all of us. I always say everything in moderation, but what’s really great about a plant-based diet, too, is it does help with your gut health, your gut flora, and 70% of the immune system is in your gut, and everyone’s focused on immunity right now.

Josh Lane
Yes.

Sara Bonham
So, I would say, yes, a plant-based diet is encouraged even if in moderation.

Josh Lane
Again, what is the formula you’re using and how much should we be using of DHA a day per day, in your opinion, to keep us sharp?

Sara Bonham
That’s a great…yeah, so with DHA…I like that you mentioned DHA because our product has a…it’s sourced from not fish oil, it’s sourced from, I believe it’s called, lichen, which is an alga, and so it’s all plant-based and there’s actually health claims for DHA that it does support brain health. It really nourishes the brain. We have about 32 mg per eight-ounce bottle, so we like to say you can have one or two bottles of Perennial a day to really help nourish your brain, keep you mentally sharp, but yeah. You can also consume more via supplement, but it’s all really about absorption too, like how’s your body going to digest the DHA and with all of the select nutrients, and that’s why Perennial we really encourage having our products mixed in with other nutrients that enhance the absorption of the DHA, and it just tastes better, I think.

That was a real key pillar for us, and focus was making these plant-based ingredients taste delicious, so you don't feel like you're consuming, yeah, omega where you get that fishy aftertaste or some sort of bitter aftertaste. It’s a part of your day, there’s no sacrifice, and you can have it as a mid-afternoon snack instead of a chocolate bar. A lot of consumers do that with our Daily Gut & Brain chocolate product.

Josh Lane
Yeah, it seems to me that would be a much better idea to have the Daily Gut & Brain as opposed to a chocolate bar, and I guess people are…it really does seem to me that now in 2021 that people really are much more alert to the importance of nutrition than they were, certainly…I remember back in the late ‘60s or ‘70s people kind of thought the whole subject was a joke and they were very dismissive, and now people really…even if they don't necessarily really do it they kind of recognize the value of it.

Now, also you have B12 in your formulation. Now, there’s a bone of contention, because as I remember, as a very young man, when I was vegan for a while there, back in the ‘60s and early ‘70s, there was no discussion that I ever saw that the vegan diet was lacking in B12, and now we certainly know that. So, how important is B12, and is that why you included it in your formulation?

Sara Bonham
Yes, for many reasons. Six percent of adults over 60 today aren’t getting enough B12, so we really wanted to add that, and it also works with other B vitamins to enhance cognitive nutrition and just overall energy, so we really did want to add that into the product as well, so I’m really glad you mentioned that and as well, as we age, there’s a decline in gastric acid, you know digestive enzymes in our stomach, so B12 also isn’t absorbed as much so supplementing with B12, whether it be in a supplement or in just a really great tasting drink, and Daily Gut & Brain is a good option, and it does lack in a plant-based diet in general, so fortification is used.

Josh Lane
Our guest is Sara Bonham, and Sara Bonham is the co-founder of Perennial, and Perennial has a new product, it’s called Daily Gut & Brain, a plant-based nutrition drink for healthy aging for we over the age of 50, but certainly, the teenage athletes can certainly use it. I mean, if you're going to be playing tennis on your high school or college team there’s no reason you couldn't be drinking this beverage, because it just…you know, it’s a good quality nutritional beverage, a healthy beverage. Some of them have a lot of processed sugar, some of the ones you see around, this one does not, and has all the ingredients we need, omega 3, prebiotic fiber, DHA, which we all need.

Now, B6, B12, folic acid isn’t that an important triumvirate? Is that why you included all three because they work so nicely together?

Sara Bonham
Yeah, that’s correct. You know, they really do enhance the absorption of one another to really support brain health. In fact, Perennial’s Daily Gut & Brain products have the highest quantity of vitamin B12, even B6 in the adult nutrition aisle, and putting a really high-quality ingredient like folate not folic acid just helps consumers even that much more with keeping mentally sharp and feeling their best.

Josh Lane
Wow. Well, Sara, we have about a minute left. How can listeners of Here’s to Your Health learn more about the Daily Gut & Brain products?

Sara Bonham
Yeah, so you can check out our website at liveperennial.com as well. We have a coupon running right now on Amazon to try our product, and you just would search in Daily Gut & Brain. Yeah, and you can purchase in a four-pack or 16 units at a time. We do really encourage you to try the product, have it daily, and it tastes delicious. Josh Lane
Our guest is Sara Bonham, the co-founder of Perennial, and Sara helped develop the Daily Gut & Brain, a plant-based nutrition drink for healthy aging. Sara, before we wrap up the interview today, what stores now have the Perennial Daily Gut & Brain in stock now?

Sara Bonham
So, right now we’re exclusively online, but this year…later this year you should be expecting Perennial to be in stores. We’re doing a pilot locally and nationally with some big retailers, so stay tuned. It’s best to even subscribe to our email list and we can let you know when we launch more readily in retail, but yeah, for now, you can find us on Amazon, maybe even ship a case or two to a loved one who, as we all are social distancing, championing older adult health has never really been more important.

Josh Lane
Right. That’s certainly very true. Our guest has been Sara Bonham, the scientist and the co-founder of Perennial, and Sara has a new product out called Daily Gut & Brain, which is a plant-based nutrition drink for healthy aging with omega 3s, DHA, prebiotic fiber, B6, B12, folic acid.
